Development of Irrigated Rice Production Schemes in Gambia

The Irrigated Rice Development Project is a pilot one in the Gambia that aims to increase productivity and production of rice in the north bank of the central river division, thus improving the food security of the target beneficiaries. This would be attained through the development of 1,206 hectares of agricultural land (340 hectares being low lift pump irrigation and 866 hectares under tidal irrigation). The project beneficiaries are envisaged to be subsistence farmer communities living below the poverty line who face food scarcity during the hungry season (August/September).
